shipwreck of the "Sea Venture", survival of the crew and voyages on to
Jamestowne. He will also address the life of Stephen Hopkins before and after his first voyage to the New World and his return voyage in 1620 aboard the Mayflower.
A special cruise devoted to exploring St. Catherine's Beach, St. George, Bermuda by descendants of Stephen Hopkins and others wishing to enjoy all that Bermuda offers.
In 1609 Stephen Hopkins was aboard the "Sea Venture" a ship taking passengers and cargo to Jamestown, Virginia. The Sea Venture shipwrecked off St. Catherine's Beach during a hurricane. Stephen Hopkins survived, traveled on to Jamestowne, Virginia, returned to England and in 1620 traveled to the new world aboard the Mayflower with his family.
Stephen Hopkins was probably the only passenger on the Mayflower that had been to the New World already. His time on Bermuda was an adventure that formed ideas and ideals into Hopkins life that contributed to our current way of life in America. While on Bermuda he was sentenced to death for mutiny, spared by his superiors, and probably inspired one of the characters in Shakespear's play, "The Tempest."
